The Battle Hut almost takes Freddie back to better days.

The lights, the crowd, and the sounds of a pitched pokemon battle -- it's like she's in her tournament days again; pushing herself to her limits in the minor league for a top six finish and just enough money to cover a good meal and the utilities. When somehow a shitty apartment and cup ramen dinners were hell and heaven both.

It almost takes her back. Then a hit lands too heavy and a pokemon doesn't get back up. An angry trainer goes to throw a punch and gets cut off by a knife to the gut. Oh, and she's not pushing herself to no top six. Isn't even pushing herself to win. She's here to lose, knowing damn well she's not going to be able to pay for shit battling for real against these bloodthirsty sons of bitches.

"I already told you, deal's simple," she murmurs to her next opponent from inside the voms, an exasperated hand running through her hair under her sweatshirt's hood, "We go out there, we put on a show. You get a good hit in and my 'mon goes down nice and easy. We split the money 30/70 and go our separate ways. If you want to knock me out that's 40/60. Don't puss out on me now, I've got rent to pay."

It was an exceptionally raucous night at the Battle Tent. A whopping five fighters had already been injured and escorted out to the back alley. Luckily, they at least had several leaf piles to cozy up to while they slept off the worst of their pain. Worse still, though, one Pokémon had just succumbed to its injuries and was being dragged offstage. This was a brutal sport to be sure, and yet a certain tall man in black seemed unfazed by the violence.[break][break]

Barnaby - or BEE as he was known to this type of crowd - was dressed to impress. A sheer mesh top coupled with leather tights accentuated all the best parts of his toned body. This combo plus the black satin jacket hugging Barnaby's broad shoulders was quite a sight. Fashionable and foreboding; that was the idea, anyway. He finished the look with a dramatic smokey eye - war paint for the battle to come.[break][break]

"50/50 or I tell my buddy the referee that you're trying to play games." His tone was light and conversational. Pleasant, even. Every word spoken with a smile. "C'mon, lighten up. Let's get out there and wow the crowd. I'll enter first." Before his opponent could even respond the buzzer overhead DINGED, alerting that their round was about to begin. [break][break]

Barnaby entered the ring with a flourish and was met with wild applause. He was here to win and look good doing it. It didn't even really matter if he came by that victory fair and square. Hell, the deception almost made it more gratifying. Easy money was the best kind in Barnaby's book.

The man doesn't give Freddie a chance to argue, but really why should she? If he wants to give her a healthier cut of the pie she won't complain.

She watches him strut out onto the stage with a grin. He's a crowd favorite, perfect. No one's going to complain if he loses, save the idiots betting on the underdog; and that's their own fault for banking on fantasies.

A newcomer to the region and dressed to depress, Freddie's entrance is lost in the aftershocks of her opponent's. There's no special song and dance to accompany her arrival and her sweats and sweatshirt combo does little and less to draw eyes her way. She's a nobody chilling in the shadows the star across from her creates with his shining.

She takes a pull from a flask previously hidden in her deep pockets with all the comfort of someone being thoroughly ignored, before pulling out a grey pokeball and tossing it into the center of the ring. It bounces back to her at the same time it opens with a flash of white.

Rhys, her Rhydon, appears with a mighty roar. She remembers their rehearsal.

"Let's sell this thing," she orders simply, licking a stray drop of liquor from her lips.

Barnaby regarded the dual GROUND/ROCK type with cool calculation; a look that gave nothing away. As the applause died down he released his beloved Fleur, an Alolan NINETALES of the highest pedigree. The best that money could buy. In this dismal ring on this dreary night she was a diamond amongst pebbles, a dazzling beacon in the deepest black. Comparing the two combatants, the crowd had never seen a starker contrast.[break][break]

The RHYDON's roar was countered with a loaded silence. Fleur stood elegantly, awaiting her orders. Seconds passed, feeling like hours, and then - finally - it began. With a smirk and perhaps a little too much confidence, Barnaby issued his first command. [break][break]

"Cool this one down, love." [break][break]

Immediately his NINETALES sprang into action. She moved with a terrifying speed, a NASTY PLOT on her mind. The Fox Pokémon sprinted around the ring at a break-neck pace, circling her opponent and watching for an opening. She kept her distance, though. Speed and space were her allies in this fight. RHYDON was a heavy hitter and she did not intend to give her a chance to demonstrate that. When the moment presented itself Fleur unleashed a devastating ICE BEAM, enhanced by her dark thoughts. Barnaby watched casually, wondering if the RHYDON would be frozen solid by the impact.

The Ninetales is off like a shot. Its speed is more than a little impressive, and definitely more than a match for Rhys's. Freddie smiles. Yeah, she's definitely not sure she could have wont this fight fair and square -- it's a good deal she's made tonight.

Still, they can't just lay down and die can they?

"Wait for it to make a move and pin it down! Slow and roll!" she shouts to Rhys, and she obediently bides her time. While the ice-type plots she watches, and when it pauses to fire the Rhydon makes her move. Her face twists, red eyes narrowing and maw opening wide to show off sharpened teeth. The lights hit her odd and cast shadows they otherwise wouldn't as Rhys lowers her head. It all adds up to a SCARY FACE meant to make her opponent think: 'Maybe it doesn't matter how fast I run.'

Then Rhys is gritting her teeth as the ICE BEAM plows into her chest. Avoiding it would have been difficult, but taking it is necessary for this next bit. Following the line it draws between herself and her opponent, the Rhydon charges forward with a TAKE DOWN.

So his opponent wasn't completely inept, it seemed. She demonstrated strategic prowess - to a degree. At the sacrifice of her Pokémon's health she managed to weasel in a hit. Luckily, the NINETALES took Rhys' charge in stride and dodged to the left. She still took a partial impact and was sent scrambling, but it thankfully wasn't a direct hit. Within seconds the fox Pokémon was back on her feet. [break][break]

In what timeline in the multiverse would Fleur lose? None. And she would prove that tonight.[break][break]

"Ooh. Time to go on the defensive." Barnaby mused, slightly impressed.[break][break]

In the moments that the RHYDON needed to recover from it's breakneck TAKE DOWN, Fleur would launch a CONFUSE RAY. Then, for good measure, a dazzling MIST exuded from every pore of her body. She continued circling Rhys, slower but more concentrated now. Waiting for her opening. One more ICE BEAM should be enough to beat the rampaging dinosaur.
